Adventures in Sound combines the expected and the unexpected. Bringing together some of the top improvisers from the UK and beyond, the afternoon features short sets from established acts alongside a series of spontaneous collaborations, as the groups are mixed up into duets and small groups performing on stage together for the first time. Presented by BBC Radio 3's Jez Nelson, the event will be broadcast on Jazz on 3 on Monday 18 November.

LEAFCUTTER JOHN

Leafcutter John mixes found acoustic sounds and processed instruments in his electronic, laptop-based improvisations. His work as part of ‘post-jazz’ band Polar Bear is well known but he is also an established solo performer, working with both cutting-edge software and evocative field recordings.

ANTON HUNTER TRIO

Perhaps best known as the guitarist in the Manchester-based Beats & Pieces big band, Anton Hunter explores more introspective and spacious music with this trio, featuring his brother Johnny on drums and bassist James Adolpho. The group find space for freer explorations within structures that draw on post-rock and ambient electronic influences.

JEFF WILLIAMS TRIO

US drummer Jeff Williams is steeped in the jazz tradition, having played for many years with the likes of Stan Getz, Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano. He now spends much of his time in London, and this hard-swinging trio brings him together with two of the city’s most exciting young players, saxophonist Josh Arcoleo and bassist Sam Lasserson.

ANDREAS SCHAERER

Singer and composer Andreas Schaerer leads Swiss band Hildegard Lernt Fliegen, and their approach, in which no genre is off limits, is reflected in his solo performances too – beatboxing, operatic flourishes, cabaret and extended techniques all feature, demonstrating an extraordinary vocal range.
