Baba Yaga's Hut: Tasos Stamou + Left Hand Cuts off the Right – MATINEE

No Longer Available

Electroacoustic music composer and multi-instrumentalist free improv performer Tasos Stamou will present a live version of his recently released album ‘Antiqua Graecia’ by Finnish label Ikuisuus. Being the last of a trilogy (two albums previously released by Discrepant), where Stamou is using clear influences dragged by his Greek music heritage, this work stands between antique experimentalism and future folklore; improvised solos with traditional instruments, live electroacoustic manipulations and use of folk tunes field recordings are combined into a sonic universe inspired by the idea of motherland.

Tasos Stamou

Electroacoustic music composer and performer, alternative electronic music instrument maker, tutor and sound technologist.

During a decade of sound performances and recordings, Tasos Stamou has developed a unique style of live electroacoustic composition. Long and continuous pieces are created on stage or in the studio using a “portable electroacoustic music studio”. His gear consists of acoustic (prepared zither, reeds, recorders, objects) and electronic instruments (handmade electronics, modular synthesizer systems and live processed feedback loops). Based on sustained tonal textures and free improvised instrumental solos, his live compositions create a particular and unique atmosphere of ritual noise.

Although mainly a solo performer and recording artist, he frequently collaborates with other sound artists, improvisers and experimentalists (such as Adam Bohman, Alan Wilkinson, London Improvisers Orchestra, Mike Cooper, Andrea Parkins, Kuupuu & Lau Nau, Terry Day, Adachi Tomomi, Ilan Manouach, Ignaz Schick, Magda Mayas, Arma Agharta, Thodoris Ziarkas, etc.) at various venues and festivals for innovative music.

He is currently leading a workshop series exploring circuit bending & hardware hacking for experimental sound production.

Left Hand Cuts Off The Right

Left Hand Cuts off the Right (Robbie Judkins) is an outlet for exploratory methods and composition. During live performances Robbie plays with a zither, bent electronics, objects, field recordings, loops and effects. The sounds are of habitual drones, gear-grinding metallic buzzing, crackling rhythms and aural oddities. Compositions and improvisations reflect on work and labour and the creation of sound as therapy.

In April 2023 he released, Free Time/Dead Time (Brachliegen Tapes), an album of focused minimalism, experimental electronics and twitching musique concrete. Free Time/Dead Time is a series of meditative compositions that reflect on the precarious boundaries between labour, leisure, and the quality of lived experience under late-capitalism.

"The freshness of Judkins's restrained approach is felt in an enjoyably weird atmospheric balance between sustained calm and sticky anxiety." The Wire

“Hardcore yoga music” The Quietus

He has created works for the Barbican, ICA, Resonance FM, Turner Contemporary, Whitechapel Gallery, University of Central Lancashire, Supernormal Festival and more. He is also the creator of Animal Sounds (Resonance FM), Parallax View (Threads Radio) and ex-member of punk-noise band Bruxa Maria.
