Okkyung Lee and Bill Orcutt return to OTO following their phenomenal duo performance here last year, subsequently released on our in-house OTOROKU label. Orcutt also performs in a very special trio alongside Pat Thomas (piano) and Paul Abbott (drums).
A native of Korea, Okkyung Lee has been developing her own voice in a contemporary cello performance, improvisation and composition. with her solid classical training as a foundation, she incorporates jazz, sounds, Korean traditional music, and noise with extended techniques to create her unique blend of music.
Since moving to New York in 2000, she has performed and recorded with numerous artists such as Laurie Anderson, Carla Bozulich, John Butcher, Nels Cline, Chris Corsano, Axel Dörner, John Edwards, Carlos Giffoni, Vijay Iyer, Urs Leimgruber, Thurston Moore, Ikue Mori, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Evan Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, Tyshawn Sorey, C Spencer Yeh and John Zorn to name a few.
Okkyung has released albums on Tzadik, psi, Dancing Wayang, Ecstatic Peace!, Emanem and Editions Mego. She has received a composer commission from New York state council on the arts in 2007 and foundation for contemporary arts grant in 2010.
Former guitarist and founder of the duo Harry Pussy (later a trio) Bill Orcutt’s sound is a stuttered reimagining of blues guitar. One can hear familiar Southern folk scales between Orcutt’s jagged solo acoustic phrases, pulling and pushing melodies into unresolved fragments that eventually come unmoored in vast and satisfying note-torrents.
Pat Thomas studied classical piano from aged 8 and started playing Jazz from the age of 16. He has since gone on to develop an utterly unique style - embracing improvisation, jazz and new music. He has played with Derek Bailey in Company Week (1990/91) and in the trio AND (with Noble) – with Tony Oxley’s Quartet and Celebration Orchestra and in Duo with Lol Coxhill.

Paul Abbott is an artist and musician based in London, working through questions and feelings connecting music and language: using real and imaginary drums, synthetic sounds, performance and writing.
His current collaborations include XT & lll人 with Seymour Wright and Daichi Yoshikawa, Falls with Keira Greene, ULAPAARC with Cara Tolmie and an ongoing project with Will Holder. A series of solo performances in Cafe OTO’s project space are documented here. Recent releases include solo's Sphuzo, qno, & Vagus and Pah' (XT), and vjerhanxsk (lll人). He is one of the co-editor’s of Cesura//Acceso and was one of the Sound and Music “Embedded” resident artists at Cafe Oto 2015-2016.
In addition Abbott has collaborated and performed with numerous other artists and musicians, including: Benedict Drew, Pat Thomas, Ute Kanngiesser, Billy Steiger, Bill Orcutt, Danny Haywood, Joel Grip, Brandon La Belle, Eddie Prevost, Steve Noble, Sebastian Lexer, Evan Parker and Otomo Yoshihide.
