Unpredictable Series presents AV Night dedicated to various audiovisual performances, combining digital and analogue approaches with improvisation in each set. For the first time the trio Matt Black, Blanca Regina and Reuben Sutherland perform in London an audiovisual improv set.

Matt Black

Matt Black is half of legendary DJ duo and multimedia pop group Coldcut, formed in 1987, and founders of Ninja Tune, the UK label. In 2015 Ninja Tune celebrated 25 years as one of the worlds leading electronic music labels and a beacon for the independent music spirit. In 2017 Coldcut celebrated 30 years in electronic music with a string of gigs releases and special projects. A new album is coming in 2020.

Coldcut are known for innovations in DJing, remixing, mashup, VJing, apps and multimedia. Over 28 years they have combined cutting edge artistic expression with positive activist themes in such pieces as Journeys by DJ, People Hold On, Stop This Crazy Thing, Timber, Atomic Moog, Panopticon, Re:volution, Energy Union, Walk a Mile, True Skool, Robbery and many more. Coldcut have worked with a wild range of artists, activists and other groups and luminaries eg Steve Reich, James Brown, Jello Biafra, Saul Williams, Robert Owens, Lisa Stansfield, Crass, Roots Manuva, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Greenpeace, and Avaaz.

In 2011 Matt designed the iOS app Ninja Jamm, Ninjatune's first music app which has had over 500,000 downloads; Matt uses Ninja Jamm to perform, lectures on apps, technology and music, and does workshops on how people can use the app for their own music. In 2017 Coldcut released 2 more apps he designed, Pixi a visual synth, and Robbery a satirical video game. Midivolve, a music software collaboration with Ableton was released July 2017. At Splice festival May 2017 Matt showcased his experiments with Style Transfer, a cutting edge new style of visual processing using AI techniques. Matt collaborated with artist Wolfgang Buttress (the Hive, Kew) for BEAM AV installation Glastonbury 2019. Jamm Pro his latest app will be released in late 2019.

Matt's stated ambition is to 'create positive art, music and spiritual technology to blow the minds of the entire planet and catalyse the advance of cooperative strategies'. He continues to gig, lecture, DJ, VJ, record, make films, develop software and bridge the worlds of technology, club culture, art and activism.

Blanca Regina

Blanca Regina is an interdisciplinary artist, tutor, and independent curator who works with spontaneous composition systems creating multimedia landscapes using voice, objects, electronics, and visuals. She is also looking at book arts, immersive media, and design. Between London and Madrid together with Steve Beresford, she founded the Unpredictable Series, which focused on spontaneous music and experimentation in visual arts following her first collective Mademotion founded in Madrid. She has produced three albums with Beresford, mixed and mastered by Dave Hunt in London, ‘What Blue’ (2020) Duets with Steve Beresford; ‘Duets with Blanca Regina, Spontaneous Music’ featuring duets with Leafcutter John, Jack Goldstein, John Butcher, Benedict Taylor, Matthias Kispert, Aneek Thapar, Steve Beresford, Sharon Gal, and Hyelim Kim and and ‘Art of Improvisers’ (2017) a collection album with several artists concentrating in women improvisers. With longtime collaborator and artist Leafcutter John capturing their live performances in 2017 they created ‘Miga’ a limited edition Pendrive and digital release. Other collaborations in music and audiovisual performances include duos with Matthias Kispert, Peter Cusack, Matt Black, Sr Arribas, Terry Day Sharon Gal, Adriana Camacho, and David Toop...She has produced exhibitions, performances and workshops internationally with presentations in London - Cafe Oto, Turner Contemporary, Barbican, Tate Modern - in Madrid - PhotoEspaña, La Casa Encendida, Cruce - in Mexico - Fundación Pedro Meyer, Biblioteca Henestrosa, in Berlin - HKW, Sowieso .- She has provided guest lectures and workshops in the UK and internationally including at the University of the Arts London, Goldsmiths University, Guildhall, Ravensbourne University…Her work has been supported by Arts Council England, Sound & Music, BMC, Amexcid, Photo-España, and Garage Cube.

Reuben Sutherland

REUBEN SUTHERLAND is a New Zealander who lives in Britain. He is an artist and VJ, director specialising in mixing up live action and animation.
Sutherland joined with Daniel Heyhurst in Sculpture, a Duo that plays with unstable forms of animation and music live zoetrope-video art performances with a record player and a camera. Hayhurst plays improvised music with tape loops modular and found material and effects equipment. Sculpture has performed in festivals and clubs in Europe. Canada. Musical colaborations include Fear of fluffing, hotdoggrrrl, and sculpture, leaning toward DIY and out of sync loops.

Kireme

Kireme is a London based collective duo, Noriko Okaku (Visual) and Akihide Monna (Sound). Their first show untitled no.1 was performed at Barbican Centre, London in 2015 as part of The Station Station Exhibition by Doug Aitken.

Monna is a London based drummer from a band called BO NINGEN. He has played many festivals including Glastonbury, Coachella, and Fuji Rock. They are fusing disparate sounds and influences into a fierce, eclectic torrent of grooves and bringing them across the oceans. www.boningen.info
Okaku is a London based collage artist whose work incorporates with not only animation but also audiovisual live, installation and everyday products. Her work focuses on the conversation that can be engendered in a relationship between ‘objects and observer’. It is to examine how we, as human, can enrich the comprehension of self and others.

We are performing Closing day of the world (2019) 17’00” at Cafe OTO on 21 Aug.
This is a performance in consideration of memory by use of found film footage.

Resolution

Resolution is a South East London collective and events series encompassing various mediums, including Surround Sound Diffusion, Audio-Visual Art and a broad range of Experimental Electronic Music, utilising new programming developments and intricate sound spaces. The performance is a collaboration between Charles Vaughan and Henrik Blomfelt.

Resolution will be presenting an improvised performance that juxtaposes the analog and digital worlds, with a focus on tape and digital manipulation. We will explore the relationship these opposing formats have with digital processing techniques, such as granular synthesis and exploring digital space. Accompanying this is an audio reactive visual display, controlled and partially created by the live improvised audio. Resolution will delve into layers of detailed sonic and visual ambience, exploring the intrinsic relationship between the two mediums.
