Rupert Clervaux celebrates the release of ‘Zibaldone III of CVX’, with a programme of music, spoken word and film. Made by his CVX alter-ego, the Zibaldone series combines music of many genres and literature of all kinds into a loose suspension that drifts over the lines dividing original composition and mixtape compilation. After thematic excursions into salutary poetics and psycho-social disquiet on Zibaldone I and II, this third instalment takes a distinctly political turn––finding musical settings for fragments of text and speech from diverse thinkers who’ve made it their life’s work to challenge the status quo.
As well as presenting a set of Zibaldone material, he’ll be playing alongside two of London’s busiest and most exciting musicians––the equally brilliant Valentina Magaletti and Ben Vince––in an improvisational saxophone, drums and percussion trio.
In putting together the night’s line-up, Rupert is proud to have worked with Isis O’Regan from 'political party' Room For Rebellion which campaigns and fundraises for abortion rights in Ireland. She will be presenting two pieces over the course of the night:
A dance film by Rachel Ní Bhraonáin and Sophie Hutchinson.
and Work in Progress
by Isis O'Regan & Olan Monk
DJing on the night will be James Marrs, whose Laura Lies In label released Zibaldone I and II, and Coline Cornélis, whose artwork is an integral part of the ongoing series.
Rupert Clervaux is a musician, audio-engineer and writer from London. He was a founder member of Sian Alice Group (2007-2012), and since then has collaborated on numerous projects with, amongst others, Beatrice Dillon, Spring Heel Jack, Ben Vince, Alexis Taylor and the Radiophonic Workshop. His mastering credits over the past decade include releases by a wealth of acclaimed experimental, electronic and improvisational artists. Working under the name CVX, he released the first two instalments of his Zibaldone series in early 2017 (on Laura Lies In). For this show to mark the release of Zibaldone III (on Berceuse Heroique), he’ll be joined by regular collaborator Eben Bull on various instruments, and Manchester-based artist Joe Beedles who’ll be mixing live visuals.
Ben Vince makes music purely with the saxophone, creating a collage of melodies, textures and rhythms, twisted and pitched, expanding the sound palette whilst stretching the formula with improvised live sets that incorporate electronica and occasional percussionists.
Since surfacing with his second album and debut vinyl, ‘Monuments’, in April 2017 on Blank Editions (responsible for recent output of Thurston Moore, Tomaga & Housewives), Vince continues with a restless live schedule, playing solo as well as in live projects with Housewives, Data Quack (with Charles Hayward), Coby Sey, Mollusc and Rupert Clervaux.
In 2018, he will perform at Rewire Festival and other select events. Acts he has supported solo include William Basinski, Silver Apples, Pharmakon, Visible Cloaks and Keiji Haino & Charles Hayward
