We are delighted to host the launch of the debut tape release of the Chinese, London-based duo Mengting Zhuo and Li Song. "two rooms" released by Anne-F Jacques' tape label presses précaires in June, marks their first recorded release since their collaboration began in 2020. The tape features two live recordings from 2022, showcasing their practices that encompass body, sound, objects, site and performance.
They will be performing a new work as part of a series of scores titled “Duet for portable speakers” (most recently developed for NEXT Festival in Slovakia and Magnified Ear exhibition), accompanied by a special solo set from Marie Roux of O Yama O, performance by Gao Shuyi and DJ set of vocal-only works by Jackson Burton.
Li Song is a London-based musician and computer programmer. He performs improvised music with his computer and composes music using electronics and acoustic instruments. His collaborative project with Zhu Wenbo, No Performance, focuses on compositions using environment sounds, acoustic instruments, computer algorithms, and random sequence. He is also a member of computer network music ensemble and research group, [ _ _ _ ], focusing on algorithmic collaboration. Recent works include Two Snare Drums (Infant Tree 2022), [ _ _ _ ] (with Jia Liu and Shuoxin Tan, SUPERPANG 2022) and Text (with Zhu Wenbo, Zoomin' Night 2021).
Mengting Zhuo is an artist based in London, originally from Guangzhou, China. She composes situations with site, sound, body and time, in the forms of performance, participatory installation, and concerts. Often minimalist, subtle and intimate, her work invites the audience to reflect on themes of connection, transmission, contingency and distance.
Recently, she is exploring the politics of listening through a series of happenings predominantly using non-instruments, unwanted noise, found objects and the body.
As a performer and director, she has made encounters with audiences in theatres, galleries and other spaces, including a park, a beach, a karaoke club, a flat, and online. Her work has been presented internationally, including the UK, China, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Gao Shuyi is a London-based Chinese interdisciplinary performance artist. She has an MA in Performance Making from Goldsmiths. Her expertise lies in creating body art, performance art, interdisciplinary performance, and site-specific performance. She is interested in exploring the human body and sensations with the echoes of objects and space.
She uses the process of performing to investigate the temporal nature of her existence. During her performances, she is most interested in exploring the fluidity between her conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind and the flow of actual time, performance time, memories, and dreamscapes.
