Presented by purge.xxx in association with The Wire magazine
In a career dominated by the recuperation of technology and ‘progress’ from consumer ideologies, Mika Taanila is the celluloid-wielding soothsayer of Nordic moving image; a key proponent and unparalleled forebear of ‘post-cinema’. From his earliest experiments in music with Swissair, through to the formation of his label with Jussi Lehtisalo, Ruton Music; music videos for Circle; extensive collaborations with Mika Vainio and Pan Sonic, and illuminating documentary work on musician and inventor, Erkki Kurenniemi, Taanila has for several decades helped define the Nordic avant-garde.
As part of a London-wide survey of his film work, Cafe OTO in association with purge.xxx and The Wire magazine presents the debut performance of PAKASTEET, a new collaboration between Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle) and Mika Taanila, featuring special guest Charles Hayward (This Heat), and a performance by Bruce Gilbert (Wire). Patchfinder DJ. Supporting programme of Taanila films:
