Legendary drummer Charles Hayward (This Heat) presents the first live tour of his Anonymous Bash project – a record, conceived, recorded and produced at Manchester's Islington Mill as part of the first Samarbeta music residency program.
The record itself was recorded over 5 days in May when Charles collaborated with musicians from bands; Gnod, Part Wild Horses Mane on Both Sides, Naked on Drugs, Locean, Terminal Cheesecake and 2 Koi Karp. Charles then came back to Islington Mill in June and worked with Sam Weaver (Hungry Ghost) and took the recordings made back in May and turned them into Anonymous Bash.
The live line up consists of Paddy Shine (Gnod), Sam Weaver (Hungry Ghost), Chris Haslan (Gnod), David Mclean (Naked on Drugs), Jefferson Temple (Locean) and Marlene Ribeiro (Negra Branca), with special sporadic appearances from Lousie Woodcock (2 Koi Karp). The only time this record has been performed live was at the Anonymous Bash record launch at Islington Mill on December 12th. This live performance will be a continuing progression as these musicians develop themselves as a new band.
Charles Hayward is an English drummer/singer/composer and was a founding member of the experimental rock groups This Heat and Camberwell Now. He also played with early European improv group Mal Dean's Amazing Band and gigged and recorded with Phil Manzanera in Quiet Sun as well as a short stint with Gong. Since the late 80's he has concentrated on solo projects and collaborations, including Massacre (with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith), Monkey Puzzle Trio and Albert Newton (with Pat Thomas and John Edwards). The project This Is Not This Heat has recently completed a 3 year series of performances in UK, Europe, US and Japan.
Throughout a nearly 50 year career Charles has developed idiosyncratic attitudes and insights into a wide range of soundwork, spanning improvisation, song, sound as sound, using order and chaos as creative energies. He curates a six monthly series of performances, workshops and installation called Charles Hayward Presents on behalf of Lewisham Arthouse for Albany Theatre. Recent releases include ‘Objects of Desire’ cassette on Blank Editions and the piano centred song cycle ‘Begin Anywhere’ on Klanggalerie & God Unknown Records.
“As impassioned and animated offstage as behind his massive drumkit, Charles Hayward radiates a genuine intensity. He first came to wide attention as drummer with the highly influential This Heat as the embers of Post-Punk simmered off into wilder experimental tangents. He has released a dozen solo and colaborative albums, and puts on rare solo live shows which pull the raw muscular percussion at the heart of Rock into new shapes with devastatingly powerful results.” – Freq
"Telepathic magic……. Hayward is one of the most life-affirming people who stalks this dark globe." - SOUND PROJECTOR
Nick Hennies is a percussionist and composer from Louisville, KY currently residing in Ithaca, NY. His work is primarily concerned with an immersive, psychoacoustic presentation of sound brought about by an often grueling, endurance-based performance practice that Nathan Thomas of Fluid Radio described as, "a highly sophisticated and refined performance technique...that starts and ends with listening and encourages a different way of listening from its audience." He received his M.A. in percussion from the University of California-San Diego in 2003 where he studied with renowned percussionist Steven Schick and is also a member of Meridian, a percussion trio with Tim Feeney and Greg Stuart. Prior to relocating to Ithaca Hennies was based in Austin, TX for ten years where he performed with the Austin New Music Co-op, The Weird Weeds and a variety of other projects.
Hennies is also an interpreter of the work of other modern composers having recorded and performed music by John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Jandek, Peter Ablinger, Kunsu Shim, Jürg Frey, Ellen Fullman, Radu Malfatti, Arnold Dreyblatt and many others. His work as both composer and performer can be heard on a wide variety of labels including Quakebasket, Senufo Editions, Accidie, Quiet Design and many others.
In 2013 Hennies also founded the record label Weighter Recordings for releasing his own work and other new and unusual music by living composers.
