The world’s very best spinet/viola da gamba/harmonium trio, Tse (Christoph Schiller / Pierre-Yves Martel / Cyril Bondi) recently released a great album on the Another Timbre label, in which they developed a particular way of using pitch and melodic elements in improvisation. Tonight they will continue to explore this area, and their unique instrumentation will be complemented by Angharad Davies, who needs no introduction.
There will be three sets:
1 - violin solo by Angharad Davies
2 - the Tse trio
3 - quartet with Angharad joining the trio
Christoph Schiller (spinet) lives in Weil-am-Rhein in South Germany, but has a workshop across the Swiss border in Basel, from which he runs his Atelierkonzert series of concerts. He studied fine art before turning to music, and now plays both baroque and contemporary music as well as improvisation. Frequent collaborators include Magnus Granberg, Birgit Ulher, Anna-Kaisa Meklin, Rhodri Davies and Sebastian Lexer. His music has been released on labels such as Another Timbre, Matchless, Creative Sources, Hybrid and Wandelweiser.
Cyril Bondi (harmonium) lives in Geneva, where he runs the Insubordinations label with d’incise, his most frequent collaborator. Together they organise a range of ensembles from their duo Diatribes to the Insub Meta Orchestra, which features more than 30 European experimental musicians. As well as d’incise, he has frequently played with Jacques Demierre, Magnus Granberg, Ryoko Akama, Cristian Alvear and Sebastien Branche, and the group Plaistow.
Pierre-Yves Martel (viola da gamba) is an instrumentalist / sound artist living in Montreal, Canada, where he revisits his instrument, using it in new contexts that engage with the contemporary world. As well as working as a solo performer and creating music for film, he has long-standing collaborations with Magda Mayas, Kim Myhr, Karl-Ludwig Hübsch, Philip Zoubek, Martin Tétreault, Eric Normand and Isaiah Ceccarelli.
Angharad Davies is a Welsh violinist based in London working with free-improvisation, compositions and performance. Her approach to sound involves attentive listening and exploring beyond the sonic confines of her instrument, her classical training and performance expectation.
Much of her work involves collaboration. She has long standing duos with Tisha Mukarji, Dominic Lash and Lina Lapelyte and plays with Common Objects, Cranc and Skogen. She has been involved in projects with Tarek Atui, Tony Conrad, Richard Dawson, Gwenno, Roberta Jean, Jack McNamara, Rie Nakajima, Tim Parkinson, Eliane Radigue, Georgia Ruth and J.G.Thirlwell.
Most of her records are released on Another Timbre but she also has releases on Absinth Records, Confrontrecords, Emanem, Potlatch and winds measure recordings. Her first orchestral piece was commissioned by LCMF in 2019.
