What is the mass of sound? How much space does it occupy? Without matter there is no sound, but sound is not the matter that carries it.
Sound Matter brings together six unique performers in a program of three intimate sets. The concert presents different perspectives, focusing on the various materials used for music and sound creation. It highlights improvisation as means for composition and explores collaboration as a process of offering and sharing creative visions.
Angharad Davies is a Welsh violinist, based in London, working with free-improvisation, compositions and performance.
Much of her work involves collaboration. She has long standing duos with Tisha Mukarji, Dominic Lash and Lina Lapelyte and plays with Apartment House, Cranc, Common Objects, Richard Dawson's band and Skogen. She has been involved in projects with Tarek Atui, Tony Conrad, Laura Cannell, Jack McNamara, Rie Nakajima, Eliane Radigue, Roberta Jean and J.G.Thirlwell.
She has released records on Absinth Records, Another Timbre, Potlatch and Confrontrecords.
Her album Ffansion | Fancies was voted in the top 12 albums for Radio 3's Late Junction.
Lina Lapelyte is an artist, composer, musician and performer. She says of her practice, ‘it can be placed ‘in-between’; in-between classical and experimental, music and fine art, composing and improvising.’ Initially trained as a classical violinist in Lithuania Lina showed an interest in experimental music from early on. Her experience playing with the likes of David Toop, John Butcher and Anton Lukoszevieze within the London improvised music scene in 2006 radically changed her way of composing, her pieces becoming frameworks for improvisations rather than finished compositions. Questioning the importance of musical training became another strand in her work leading her to incorporate untrained performers in unorthodox ways. Her opera Have a Good Day! examines issues of displacement, otherness and beauty through piano, electronics and text. It involves using actual cashiers from local supermarkets for the vocal strand of the piece. Another piece, Candy Shop, reworks the games of power embedded in rap songs, making them into lullabies while narrating a story about beauty, gender and the mundane. ‘Lina is working right at the edge of what popular music could become.’ Brian Eno
Andie Brown is a musician, artist, maker and researcher who began her music career as a bass player during her teens. In 2007 Andie began performing and recording as a solo artist under the name These Feathers Have Plumes. Over the last decade, Andie has been experimenting with glass and electronics, creating what she has termed an “augmented glass harp”. Andie has performed extensively including at Colour Out of Space and Full of Noises Festivals and at venues such as Cafe OTO, Union Chapel and the De La Warr Pavilion. She has also taken part in ensemble works with Part Wild Horses Mane on Both Sides at Tate Britain and at White Cube Gallery for Christian Marclay conducted by Steve Beresford. Elsewhere, Andie has enjoyed collaborating with a diverse range of artists including Sophie Cooper, Joincey, Kelly Jayne Jones, Dale Cornish and Phil Julian but most often with artist and vocalist Sharon Gal. Since 2016 Andie has also been working with sound installation and film; in 2017, Andie was nominated for the PRSF Oram Awards and began a practiced based PhD at the University of Huddersfield. Adam Bohman has been operating on the outer fringes of underground music for decades. Working with home-built instruments, found objects, tape cut-ups, collages, ink drawings and graphic scores. Favouring acoustic sounds over electronics, he explores the minute tendrils of sounds coaxed from any number of non-musical instruments and objects. He is a member of British experimental groups, Morphogenesis, The Bohman Brothers, Secluded Bronte, and The London Improvisers Orchestra. Adam's music is unique and experimental, incorporating Fluxus japery, musique concrete, sound poetry and free improvisation.
David Toop (born 1949) has been developing a practice that crosses boundaries of sound, listening, music and materials since 1970. This encompasses improvised music performance, writing, electronic sound, field recording, exhibition curating, sound art installations and opera. It includes seven acclaimed books, including Rap Attack (1984), Ocean of Sound (1995), Sinister Resonance (2010), Into the Maelstrom (2016) and forthcoming - Flutter Echo, a memoir first published in Japan in 2017 (May 2019) and Inflamed Invisible: Writing On Art and Sound 1976-2018 (2020). Briefly a member of David Cunningham’s pop project The Flying Lizards in 1979, he has released thirteen solo albums, from New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments on Brian Eno’s Obscure label (1975) and Sound Body on David Sylvian’s Samadhisound label (2006) to Entities Inertias Faint Beings (2016). His 1978 Amazonas recordings of Yanomami shamanism and ritual were released on Sub Rosa as Lost Shadows (2016). In recent years his collaborations include Rie Nakajima, Akio Suzuki, Tania Chen, John Butcher, Ken Ikeda, Elaine Mitchener, Henry Grimes, Sharon Gal, Camille Norment, Sidsel Endresen, Alasdair Roberts, Thurston Moore, Ryuichi Sakamoto and a revived Alterations, the iconoclastic improvising quartet with Steve Beresford, Peter Cusack and Terry Day first formed in 1977. Curator of sound art exhibitions including Sonic Boom at the Hayward Gallery (2000), his opera – Star-shaped Biscuit – was performed as an Aldeburgh Faster Than Sound project in 2012. He is currently Professor of Audio Culture and Improvisation at London College of Communication.
Sharon Gal is an interdisciplinary artist, performer, vocalist, free improviser and composer. Her work explores presence, listening, embodiment, and the relationship between people, sound and space. She performs solo and in collaborations with David Toop, Steve Beresford, Phil Minton, Yoni Silver, Charles Hayward, Lina Lapelyte, Andie Brown and Blanca Regina.
Sharon directs site specific, participatory group compositions: L’esprit D’escalier for Voices in a staircase, Toy Orchestra & Room to Breathe with children/adults, Long Drone for mixed ensembles, Gals with Guitars with female players, Sound Out for M/Any Voices and Feel the Noise for guitars & micro amps.
Sharon is a co-founder of Resonance 104.4 FM arts radio. Her music was released by various labels; The Tapeworm, American Tapes, Ash International, A Silent Place Records, Chocolate Monk, Emanem Records, Ecstatic Yod , Paradigm Records , My Dance the Skull and Wild Silence, with 2 solo releases in 2018, Delicious Fish (Fractal Meat Cuts Label) and The Garden of Earthly Delights (Visible Near Midnight Recordings).
