Universal Indians is a trio comprised of Amsterdam-based, American saxophonist John Dikeman and the resourceful and powerful rhythm section of Norwegian bassist Jon Rune Strøm and drummer Tollef Østvang. Tonight they appear at OTO for the first time with regular guest, the great composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist, Joe McPhee.
This trio presents its own definition of contemporary freely improvised jazz: muscular, passionate, raw and intense music created on the spot, with no distinct leader and with tight, immediate and supportive interplay. Although informed by formative free jazz artists such as pianist Cecil Taylor, saxophonists John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Peter Brotzmann, they demonstrate clear, independent voices of their own.
John Dikeman / saxophones
Jon Rune Strom / double bass
Tollef Østvang / percussion
Joe McPhee / saxophones, pocket trumpet
John Dikeman is an American saxophonist currently residing in Amsterdam. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, John's playing runs the gamut of improvised music and technique, ranging from reductionist extended technique based improvisation to full throttle free jazz. The underlying characteristic of his music is an unnerving commitment, a total abandonment to sound.
