Spanish record label Modern Obscure Music celebrates its 10-year anniversary at Cafe Oto with three exclusive live sets.

Ana Quiroga (Houndstooth, Editions Mego), Mana (Hyperdub/Modern Obscure Music), and label founder Pedro Vian (Modern Obscure Music) will perform live to commemorate this special occasion.

Ana Quiroga

Ana Quiroga is a London-based music composer, producer, and sound designer. Her work spans various media, including arts, film, audiovisual, immersive and interactive projects.

Ana has recently joined Houndstooth and released her first solo album 'Azabache'. 'Azabache' is shaped by Ana’s deep connection to her homeland Asturias and her experience since moving to London, the project is both intimate and enchanting. From the rich Celtic heritage of Asturias – the mines, minerals, and mystical feminine energy – to the urban occultism of the city, ‘Azabache’ embodies the connection between deep and highly symbolic ancestral roots and these contemporary new beginnings.

Ana has extensive discography, releasing music on prestigious labels such as Editions Mego, Other People, and Modern Obscure Music. She is also known for being one half of the duo LCC, who released two albums and an EP on eMego, Subtempo, Comfortzone, and Irregular, among others. Additionally, Ana has released music under the alias NWRMNTC on Arboretum and QTZL.

With a prolific career performing live, she has played and showcased her work at renowned venues and festivals around the world, including Barbican London, Berlin Atonal, Cafe OTO, Sónar Barcelona, Lisboa and Hong Kong, MUTEK Montreal, Argentina and Mexico, Superblue London, Somerset House Studios, MIRA Festival, LEV, Espacio Fundación Telefónica Lima, CCD Mexico, and Corsica Studios.

Mana

Mana is Daniele Mana’s latest project which recently found its home in the legendary London- based Hyperdub.

His works feature unpredictable evolutions and a unique taste for melodies. He writes and produces for theatre, film and advertising alongside his artistic projects such as Vaghe Stelle, One Circle, an ensemble formed by Mana, Lorenzo Senni and Francesco Fantini, and his latest project, Mana, recently debuted with an album on the iconic Hyperdub.

After his 2017 debut EP for Hyperdub, “Creature”, which was a taut, evocative suite of beatless, almost neo-classical electronics, his sequent two albums find his music has caught an alien virus and started hallucinating. “Seven Steps Behind” sounds like musical world-building rather than straightforward songwriting. Here the borders between reality and the weird have collapsed on each other, and with each listen through its zigzagging course, you’re rewarded by its strange twists and turns.

His music is electronic that doesn’t always sound electronic; a great deal of his sound has been created to sound like prepared pianos, harpsichords, cellos and flutes. At other times, sampled acoustic instruments and specially recorded sessions have
been processed through software and careful editing. It’s this sophisticated layering of contrasting versions of the same sources that helps give this record its uncanny balance. The album also plays with your sense of time in its mostly drum-free hall of mirrors, pulling from minimalism, chamber music, dark jazz, and synthesiser experiments.

Warm, and rich with earthy detail, defined by complex use of space and contrast, there is a depth of focus and detail to his tracks and Mana leaves the imagination of the listener to indulge in most of the time.

Sunny Graves

Sunny Graves is the medium through which Latino-British producer and sound artist Simon Williams channels his current sonic output. Born in Guatemala, he grew up between Venezuela and the UK, eventually becoming a foundational part of the then nascent jungle and outsider club movement in Caracas before migrating to Barcelona in the early 2000s. Since his initial releases as Sunny Graves, he has performed at various international festivals (including Sonar, Primavera Sound, Mutek, MIRA, LEV) and independent events around Europe/UK, and has contributed to the development of the fwd-thinking music scene in Barcelona through curating and organizing events with like-minded artists and friends, most recently via the nomadic/shape-shifting No Skyline platform, while also creating sound work for performances, films and installations in collaboration with visual artists. Following five years of pre/post-brexit life in London, as well as an extended collaborative research trip to Mexico, he returned to Barcelona in 2022 and is currently preparing the release of his next record. Both in a live format and in his dj sets, Sunny Graves traverses a wide spectrum of emotions and sounds, exploring the free-form territory that lies between the concrete and the abstract, freely transcending stylistic/formal boundaries while activating the potentials of sound systems as instruments for sharing knowledge, healing and resisting together.
