The retrospective Terry Fox: Elemental Gestures, which opened at the Berlin Academy of the Arts in 2015 before being shown in Mons, Wuppertal, and the Kunstmuseum Bern in 2017, clearly demonstrated Fox’s key role in the development of art since the 1970s. It not only revealed him as a pioneer of performance, video art, and sound installation but also presented his experimental exploration of language and space. A symposium held in conjunction with the Bern exhibition adopted a variety of approaches to reflect on the performances and installations of this European American based in Switzerland. This is the starting point for the publication in which scholars, artists, and close associates seek to define more precisely the often silent “situations” at work between object and word, sound and sculpture, labyrinth and experience, body and action.
